The click disappears
In traditional search, value flows through the click. A user searches, sees a result, clicks through, and a brand gets a visitor. Even a zero-click search — where Google shows an answer without a navigation — at least puts the brand name and URL on screen. Answer engines collapse that flow. A user asks a question in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Perplexity, and the engine synthesizes an answer from multiple sources. The user reads the answer and leaves. There is no click. There is no visit. The brand either appears in the answer or it does not. The citation becomes the unit of value. Not the impression. Not the clickthrough rate. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving how a brand appears in AI-generated answers. It covers:- Whether an answer engine mentions the brand at all (visibility)
- How early in the answer the brand appears (position)
- What the engine says about the brand (sentiment and accuracy)
- Whether the engine cites a brand-controlled source (citation)
- How the brand’s coverage compares to competitors across the same questions

A brand can hold the top organic position for “best email marketing platform” on Google and be entirely absent from ChatGPT’s answer to the same question. This is not a bug in either system. The two systems use different signals:- Google ranks documents by relevance, authority, and user engagement signals
- An answer engine retrieves passages, grounds them against search results, and synthesizes — it may or may not include the top-ranking page
What an answer engine does
The pipeline has four stages: Retrieval. The engine searches its knowledge base, index, or live web for passages relevant to the prompt. In a RAG (retrieval-augmented generation) system, this stage queries a vector index or a search API. The retrieval index decides which documents are candidates. Grounding. The engine decides whether to cite sources. Grounded engines (Perplexity, Gemini with search, ChatGPT with browsing) retrieve and cite. Ungrounded engines (the base model of any LLM without retrieval) generate from parametric memory only. Synthesis. The retrieved passages and the model’s training are combined into a coherent answer. This is where information is compressed, rephrased, and potentially dropped. A brand mentioned in three of five retrieved passages may or may not survive synthesis. Citation attribution. Grounded engines attach references. The format varies — inline numbers, footnote-style links, or source cards. A brand that appears in the answer without a citation has no discoverable source for the claim.What a brand can influence
Not every stage is accessible:- Retrieval is the most actionable. Structured data, clear content hierarchy, technical SEO, and backlink profiles determine whether an engine’s crawler finds a page and includes it in the retrieval index. This is where SEO and GEO overlap.
- Grounding is engine-specific. A brand cannot force an engine to cite. It can make its content citable by using authoritative, factual, well-sourced claims.
- Synthesis is opaque. The model decides what to include and what to drop. Repeated sampling (running the same prompt multiple times) reveals the variance. A single measurement is not reliable. See How answer engines work for why.
- Citation depends on the engine’s architecture. Perplexity cites aggressively. ChatGPT cites when browsing. Claude cites when retrieval is enabled. The platform measures citation rate per engine to show which sources engines trust.
What GEO is not
GEO is not prompt injection. It is not manipulating an LLM output with hidden text or system-prompt leaking. Those techniques are fragile, engine-specific, and violate the terms of most providers.
