Three acronyms describe optimization for different retrieval surfaces. They share tactics but optimize for different outcomes.

SEO — ranking documents

Search Engine Optimization improves a page’s position in a ranked list of links. The unit of success is the organic clickthrough rate. Signals include backlinks, page speed, content relevance, structured data, and domain authority. SEO assumes the user will navigate to the page. A good SEO result sends traffic.

AEO — being the extracted answer

Answer Engine Optimization targets featured snippets, knowledge panels, and direct answer boxes in traditional search engines. The unit of success is the extraction — Google showing a block of text from the page above the organic results. AEO aims for position zero. AEO tactics overlap with SEO, but the content must be structured so that Google’s extraction algorithm can isolate and display a specific passage. Lists, tables, and direct question-answer pairs help.

GEO — being cited in generated answers

Generative Engine Optimization targets the synthesized answers produced by LLM-based engines. The unit of success is the citation. A brand appears in the answer text, and the answer attributes the information to a source the brand controls. GEO does not require a click. The answer is complete. The user never visits the page. The value is in the mention itself.

Overlap

All three benefit from:
  • Technical accessibility. If a crawler cannot reach a page, no optimization matters.
  • Structured data. Schema.org markup helps all three systems understand content.
  • Authority. Backlinks and domain reputation improve ranking in all three.
  • Clear content. Well-written, factual, specific content is easier to rank, extract, and cite.

Where they conflict

Why ai-cmo.dev measures both

The platform measures SEO and GEO on the same workspace because a brand needs both. SEO shows demand — what people search for, whether they find the brand’s pages, and whether they click. GEO shows supply — whether answer engines mention the brand, what they say, and whether they cite it. A brand with strong SEO and weak GEO is visible in search but invisible in answers. A brand with weak SEO and strong GEO is cited but not found. The dashboard shows both surfaces side by side.
